Ron Korb's Flute Traveller News

Flute Traveller News Archives

2005

2005 was a very exciting year for Ron Korb. The highlight was a 26 concert tour of Asia with concerts in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Singapore in September through the end of October.

The other big news is that Ron Korb and Donald Quan have just released a Christmas CD. This is the first album they have made together since Tear Of The Sun 15 years ago. The album, entitled Seasons: Christmas Carols, was recorded the day after Christmas last year and includes holiday favorites and a brand new Christmas song. Seasons is a collection of over 60 minutes of exquisite flute and piano Christmas instrumentals. This limited edition CD is not available in stores. It can only be purchased at Ron's online store.

"Magically simple, this album is for those who love the Christmas standards. No pomp, no circumstance, no rock and roll. The duo of Korb & Quan play with joy and confidence capturing just the right mood. This album is on my player constantly."

2004

Ron Korb has become the first Canadian independent musician to commercially release a DVD in widescreen and 5.1 surround sound. The DVD, entitled Ron Korb Live, was released in Canada by Distribution Fusion III on October 12, 2004. Filmed on a wintery evening at the Pavilion Arthabaska in Victoriaville Quebec, this DVD captures the excitement, warmth and magic of this unique artist's live performances.

This DVD has expanded special features including an instrument dictionary, 5 music videos, audio commentary by Ron Korb, breathtaking photographs from Ron's travels, and an interview with Ron that includes stunning video footage from his time in Japan. All menus and information are in English and French.

The concert consists of many of Ron's most popular tunes from his albums such as Behind The Mask and Celtic Heartland as well as some new unreleased material.

Featured in the concert are Ron's group consisting of Ray Hickey Jr. (guitar, koto, pipa) Bill Evans (piano, B3 organ and accordion) Steve Bright (acoustic bass, shamisen and Stick) and Larry Crowe (drums, djembe and percussion). Joining Ron's regular unit are special guests French Canadian musicians Alain-Francois (violin) and Dominic Grenier (footstomping). The DVD was produced and directed by Pierre Lamoureux who has produced DVDs for Alanis Morrisette, The Who, Counting Crows, Branford Marsalis, Willie Nelson and many others.

The Ron Korb Live CD features music from the same concert as the DVD and has 5 bonus tracks.

In the fall of 2004, Ron was creative consultant for the on-camera flute work for the "Do Die, Who I Am?" episode of the TV series Wild Card. Ron provided personal coaching to Willie Garson (Stanford Sex and the City and Henry from NYPD Blues) and Aislinn Paul so that they could play the flute convincingly in long shots. Ron was Mr. Garson's double on set for flute close ups.

2000

Ron Korb's last studio album release, Celtic Heartland, was recorded at Real World Studios in Bath, England. Celtic Heartland features Hugh Marsh, Rick Lazar, Steve Lucas, Brian Hughes, Donald Quan, as well as British cellist Caroline Lavelle, uillean piper Steafan Hannigan and Irish fiddler Teresa Heanue. It has been released in Canada by Distribution Fusion III (March 2002).

While recording at Real World Studio, Ron met Peter Gabriel, who was working on his new album with Tony Levin and Steve Gadd. Gabriel was interested in the exotic flutes Ron played, and had him demonstrate each one. Peter Gabriel then mentioned he would like to introduce Ron to a good friend of his, Cambodian flute player and Human Rights Activist, Arn Chorn Pond . Ron visited Arn Chorn Pond in Lowell Mass. and the two immediately became friends. Arn survived three years the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields from age 10 to 13 before escaping to a refugee camp in Thailand. Arn has been honoured by several Human Rights organizations for establishing the CVCD Cambodian Volunteers for Community Development, The Children of War and for his work with street youth in America. Ron was invited by Arn Chorn Pond to Phnom Penh to help record music for the Cambodian Masters Performance Project. This project is designed to resurrect and preserve traditional Cambodian music by both teaching and creating a musical archive.

Ron had the pleasure and honour of working with and recording the master musicians involved in the program including Yim Saing (kloy-flute), Cheak Mach (Singer) Ek Son (takay - a horizontal stringed instrument) Yoeun Mek (tror so -two string violin) and Nong Jok (singer). While in Cambodia they also met Princess Bopha Devi and members of UNESCO.

In July 2000, Ron performed at a birthday celebration for classical guitarist Liona Boyd at her beautiful estate in Beverly Hills. In attendence were Olivia Newton John and Buzz Aldrin.

1999

Ron appeared briefly on camera in a movie by Robert Lepage called Nô. He was dressed like a Noh Flute Player in a sequence where the main characters are watching a Noh play. Ron and fellow musician taiko player Gary Nagata attended the screening of the movie at the Toronto Festival of Festivals in September and performed together at a reception for Mr.Lepage.

Ron Korb recorded flute and piccolo in Atom Egoyan's film Felicia's Journey starring Bob Hoskins. Ron also played fife on Ang Lee's film "Ride With The Devil" starring Jewel.
